Famous people through collectibles: George Harrison

Everyone knows about The Beatles and everyone's musical taste has been affected by them in one way or another. Not only did the band itself become a legend, but also each individual member managed to completely innovate the pop culture as we know it.

George Harrison, also known as "the quiet Beatle" was born on February 25, 1943. His interest in music started at his early age. As he got older the interest in Indian culture and mysticism developed in him.

Banknote, 1,000,000 Dollars, Fantasy Issues, Colnect Catalog

Even though most of The Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, there are many songs which were composed by Harrison. With music, he introduced Eastern religion and music to the Western audience.

Stamp, Paul McCartney & George Harrison, Mongolia, Colnect Catalog

Even after the break up of the band, his career kept on blooming. Rolling Stones ranked him as number 11 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Also, he became a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

In addition to their work, there are many collectibles dedicated to this amazing band. You can find many collectibles illustrating members of The Beatles or the name of their song. There is a story connected to each collectible which is always fun to learn about. Several years ago we covered "with The Beatles" Stamp and its story. If you are interested in The Beatles then you are welcome to check out more of their collectibles featured on Colnect and have fun :)

New Category: Paper Napkins

We are happy to announce the launch of a new awesome category on Colnect. Paper napkin catalog is now available for collectors around the world.

Usually, when we hear napkin we automatically assume a rectangular item, used for wiping mouth and hands while eating. But there is much more depth to it than most think. The first use of paper napkins is dated back to 2nd century BC, in ancient China and it was mainly used for serving a tea. Nowadays, napkins cover a wide array of functionality and there even exists many origami techniques to create specific paper napkin designs.

Paper napkins category was suggested on Colnect New Categories forum several years ago. Recently, we have found a dedicated coordinator for it, luissaldanam. Now we are proud to present the category to the public with more than 13,500 items yet.

Paper napkin catalog has 9 different options for sorting. These include countries, napkin types, qualities, shapes, folds, colors, uses, themes, newly added. Collection management tools are also available for this catalog.

Do you want to help to expand paper napkins on Colnect? Check our Catalog Contribution Guidelines page to find out how you could contribute. If you have paper napkins which you would like to sell or buy then don't forget to check out the marketplace.

700,007+ Stamps on Colnect

Colnectors, let's celebrate that our Stamp category has passed a new super-cool number of items, 700,007 ;)

Paintings, 1997, United Arab Emirates, Colnect catalog

Beginning a stamp collection is entertaining, discovering new information about the stamps which have been issued by the countries of the world over the years. Stamps are tiny pieces of art – colorful, well-designed. Some of them commemorate famous people and events, others - present animals and birds, flowers, railways, ships and aircrafts, buildings and bridges, armors and flags, space and sport.

Fairy Swordfish, 1982, Ascension Island, Colnect catalog

Actually, the Stamps category is the biggest one on Colnect. It has been led for a long time by two dedicated coordinators - Guido Fußhöller [footy68] and Klaus Jochimsen [Lola22]. Thank you guys for all you do for Colnectors and Colnect catalog.

Discovery of America, 500th anniv., ships, 1992, Uruguay, Colnect catalog

There are three main approaches to structuralizing stamp collection:
  • chronological - stamp lovers collect items from the specific historical period
  • thematical approach - stamps on the specific theme for example butterflies
  • geographic approach - stamps from the specific countries
What's your approach to collecting stamps?

100,001 Postcards Cataloged

We are happy to announce that postcard category on Colnect keeps on growing and this time it reached the milestone of 100,001.

Pozzallo - Il porto, Italy, Colnect Catalog

Thank you to coordinators Vadym Sulimenko [Dravec] and Grzegorz Pająk [quarteris] and everyone else who contributed to making it happen. You guys are doing an amazing job at making Colnect better.

A postcard is a piece of thin paper which makes it possible to write and mail without using envelopes. Did you know that the study and collecting of postcards are called deltiology? Deltiologists collect postcards for various reasons. Some are just attracted to postcards, while others are trying to collect postcards with some specific theme

Arcipelago Night - House with Maypole, Sweden, Colnect Catalog

Several different uses were found for postcards other than its original one. Many schools are using postcards as the way of teaching geography and also postcards are used by libraries and historical societies to determine how a certain city used to look like at a particular time in history.

7,777 Holy Cards on Colnect!

Seven is a holy number in many religions, so it is rather symbolic that our Holy Card catalog has surpassed 7,777 items!

Italy is the motherland of Catholicism, so no surprise that Penisola appenninica is the leader in this category with 6,755 items. By the way, Daniele Pennisi [Lelecollector], the coordinator of the Category, owns most of them (6,717). The two following countries are Venezuela and Spain with 318 and 115 cards correspondingly.

"Felix Martyr (holy body)", San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Colnect catalog
From aedicule-type to mechanic canivet, from digital printing to chromolithography - the variety of holy cards on the category impresses.

Jesus - Adoration of the Shepherds", Vatican City, Colnect catalog

By the way, the first holy card collectors could live even in the 15th century, at the time when first cards appeared. Not everyone could afford sacred image of their patron saint, but necessity is the mother of invention as they say. People invented handmade prints, and later on the Benziger brothers started to crank out the cards in Switzerland. Who knows, perhaps, some of Benziger prints are here on Colnect.

"Joseph", Pisano Etneo (Zafferana Etnea), Italy, Colnect catalog

Bookmarks category is launched!

Recently, we have launched a new interesting and perspective category of Bookmarks. We hope that the Colnect Bookmark catalog becomes a home for many beautiful collections from around the globe.

National Treasures from Australia's Great Libraries, Australia, Colnect catalog

The discussion on creating the bookmarks category was initiated in 2011. Then, in 2014 we found a dedicated coordinator for the category - Pelacanyes. Thank you, Andreu, for your enthusiasm and energy which powered on the category and pushed it forward to the day of the public appear. The help of all contributors who help to expand the category from the very beginning is very much appreciated.

Port Tarragona, Spain, Colnect catalog

For now, the category includes just a bit more 1000 bookmarks, but we believe that the number of both items and collectors will grow exponentially. For now, there are bookmarks from 25 countries in the catalog, but we hope that very soon many more countries will be represented there. We welcome all bookmark collectors to join us and show their collections to the whole world:)!

Il monte Fuji visto da Kanagawa, Italy, Colnect catalog

You can view bookmarks organized by countries, arrangements, shapes, materials, publishers, artists, years, themes, and newly added. You can easily navigate the catalog and sort the bookmarks by them to find the relevant ones.

Explore a new Bookmarks catalog and you can find a lot of interesting! Did you know that there is a kind of bookmark series, it's called puzzle arrangement, that's supposed pictures on the each bookmark to be a part of a bigger picture. You would need to collect all the parts of the puzzle and arrange them in the right way to see that bigger picture.

Leonardo da Vinci, Monna Lisa, Italy, Colnect catalog

Colnect has been built by collectors for collectors and any help is much appreciated. Would YOU like to join as a contributor to the Bookmark catalog as well? If you've never contributed information to Colnect before, please read our Catalog Contribution Guidelines.

65,656 Banknotes on Colnect!

We are already reaching a new milestone - 65,656 Banknotes! So, now we are taking a moment to appreciate all the new items that were added, as well as the catalog in general.

"50 Florin" (Aruba), from the Colnect catalog

As the catalog is very popular and is one of the veteran Colnect categories, it experiences rapid growth every year. Our last milestone was in late June, marking 60,006 banknotes, and now, after 9 months, we have added more than 50,000 collectibles.

The catalog includes 290+ Countries, 6 Compositions, 300+ Printers, 300+ Years, 250+ Face Values, 700+ Currencies, 17 Catalogs, as well as, Newly Added, where you can browse new banknotes added 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days ago.

Banknotes category is taken care of by two co-coordinators Vidami Istvan [mozistv] and Imre Csendes [SethChimera]. Thank you for your devotion and help!
In addition, we thank our 900+ Contributors and almost 200 Editors for adding so many collectibles every single day.

And now, we would like to show you some special banknotes from all over the world, as well as some interesting facts about them.
For example, to deal with hyperinflation that reached the crazy level of 231 million %, Zimbabwe's government issued a $100 trillion note (1 with 14 zeroes — making it the note with the highest face value in the world). It is one of the most favourite and popular items in every banknotes collection ;)

"100,000,000,000,000 Dollars" (Zimbabwe), from the Colnect catalog

Another interesting fact is that Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait has graced the currencies of 33 different countries. Nobody has beat her record yet. Canada was the first to use the British monarch's photo, in 1935, when it printed the 9-year-old Princess on its $20 notes.

The Queen is frequently shown in formal royal attire, although Canada and Australia prefer to depict her in a plain dress and pearls. And while many countries update their currencies to reflect the Queen's advancing age, others enjoy keeping her young.

And finally, the world's largest single banknote is the 100,000-piso note created by the government of the Philippines in 1998. Designed to celebrate a century of independence from the Spanish rule, the note was offered only to collectors, who could purchase one of the limited-edition notes for 180,000 pisos, or about $3,700.
