Seven is a holy number in many religions, so it is rather symbolic that our Holy Card catalog has surpassed 7,777 items!
Italy is the motherland of Catholicism, so no surprise that Penisola appenninica is the leader in this category with 6,755 items. By the way, Daniele Pennisi [Lelecollector], the coordinator of the Category, owns most of them (6,717). The two following countries are Venezuela and Spain with 318 and 115 cards correspondingly.
"Felix Martyr (holy body)", San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Colnect catalog |
From aedicule-type to mechanic canivet, from digital printing to chromolithography - the variety of holy cards on the category impresses.
Jesus - Adoration of the Shepherds", Vatican City, Colnect catalog |
By the way, the first holy card collectors could live even in the 15th century, at the time when first cards appeared. Not everyone could afford sacred image of their patron saint, but necessity is the mother of invention as they say. People invented handmade prints, and later on the Benziger brothers started to crank out the cards in Switzerland. Who knows, perhaps, some of Benziger prints are here on Colnect.
Plug in the world of collecting and make your inventions with us! If you want to contribute to Colnect, read our Catalog Contribution Guidelines.
"Joseph", Pisano Etneo (Zafferana Etnea), Italy, Colnect catalog |
